Circular Friday theme Second-hand is (currently) bad for global sustainability
After working with the outdoor sector and entrepreneurs in fast fashion, RISE was asked how global sustainability should best be supported. When this was investigated, they saw that much that is called circular does not contribute to global sustainability and developed a four-step analysis to analyze the work with “circularity"/second-hand/recycling, etc. This became the report “Second hand is (currently) bad for global sustainability”. In connection with this, they also developed a five-step model to support and guide those working on the issue. Now RISE wants to discuss what is the best way forward, but also tougher questions such as how much of the work with “circularity” is part of the problem if the goal is global sustainability? When are fundamentally unsustainable systems optimized, and when are overconsumption challenged while innovation is undermined? They want to not only focus on the problems but also examine what work supports a globally sustainable future where 11 billion people live creative and fantastic lives on a regenerative planet where “Half-Earth” can look and be accelerated. These questions and how new areas such as brain research and AI can be integrated will be discussed during this Circular Friday.
