Brazil identified as a global climate solution provider: Start-ups, tech parks, and universities could deliver gigaton-scale emission reductions while improving lives worldwide

A new report, “Gigatons of climate innovations from Brazil”, reveals that Brazil’s innovation ecosystem, spanning start-ups, tech parks, incubators, and universities, has the potential to become one of the world’s most powerful drivers of climate solutions.
Using an full climate assessment developed by the UNFCCC Global Innovation Hub, ICLEI, and Flourishing Lives for All (FL4ALL), the study finds that more than 100 Brazilian innovations could help over one billion people live better lives while avoiding more than one gigaton of CO₂ emissions, almost twice Brazil’s current total annual emissions.
The assessment included six major innovation hubs, Technology and Innovation Park São José dos Campos (PIT), Inova Unicamp, Unicamp Science and Technology Park, Impact Hub São Paulo, Technology Park of Viçosa, UFRJ Science Park. The collection was coordinated by Technology and Innovation Park São José dos Campos (PIT) with support from the UNFCCC Global Innovation Hub, ICLEI, and leading IPCC scientists.
Dennis Pamlin, Executive Director of Flourishing Lives for All (FL4ALL), said:
This report demonstrates that when innovation is guided by flourishing lives, health, connection, meaning, and opportunity, climate action becomes a source of global prosperity rather than sacrifice. Brazil’s innovation ecosystem have a fantastic opportunty to support a future where the climate challenges is addressed by making life better for people.
The report reframes Brazil’s role from being a country expected to merely cut emissions, to one capable of exporting globally sustainable solutions that improve wellbeing while reducing emissions. It calls for a “human-need driven innovation agenda” to ensure all people, in a world of 8–12 billion, can live flourishing lives on a flourishing planet.
Massamba Thioye, Founder of the UNFCCC Global Innovation Hub, emphasized the need to widen the current climate agenda:
“Our work must go beyond measuring carbon. We need to identify and scale innovations that meet human needs in sustainable ways. Brazil’s innovators are showing that health, nutrition, mobility, and circular economy solutions can be engines of global transformation.”
Pourya Salehi, Head of Urban Research at ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, added:
“Cities are at the heart of this transition. By connecting start-ups, universities, and tech parks, Brazilian cities can lead a new generation of urban innovation that turns climate action into better lives for their citizens. This is a blueprint for cities worldwide.”

“This study highlights what those of us in Brazil’s innovation ecosystem already see every day—the extraordinary capacity of our start-ups, incubators, and universities to deliver solutions that benefit both people and the planet. It’s time for Brazil to be recognized not only as a steward of forests, but as a source of transformative innovation that can befit everyone on the planet.”
The study identifies key areas where Brazilian innovations can make global impact, includiung regenerative agriculture linked to healthy meals, circular economy with focus on experiences and resource efficienty for global sustinability, a new generation of beautiful and resource effieinct buildings, and health innovations that address both physoical and mental healt. It proposes an annual Global Climate Solutions Countdown to track progress and ensure continued international collaboration that accelerate the uptake of globally sustainable climate solutions that improve the lives of people.
By reframing climate action as a positive innovation opportunity, the report calls on governments, investors, and international organizations to collaborate with Brazil in scaling solutions that create shared value and flourishing lives worldwide.
